What makes you live? (John 6:63-64)

Scripture for reflection: John 6:63-64

What do you live for? What really gets you going? These are questions many people are asked by their high school guidance councilors. What do you want to do with your life?

It is funny how often we run away from his question. I ran as far from it as I could. We don’t want to face the truth about ourselves because we are really scared of what we will find. You may not agree and that’s fine, but I encourage you to spend 15 minutes in silence and solitude. You will see just how afraid of yourself you are.

Why do we fear ourselves? I think it is because we have each wounded our spirits to a point we can no longer face it. we have lied to ourselves, we have told ourselves that the quick fixes we pursue are really the answer. Jesus says here that the flesh of no help. The things that only fulfill the desires of the flesh do not truly give life, these actually cause deeper wounds. This I clear when we see people turning to drugs and other substances to ease pain, eventually being so consummed by the substace that the substance has become a worse problem than the orignal issue.

We have all been in tha situation. Maybe we were lucky enough not to have easy access to dangerous substances, but we have all done something to escape the pain and stress of the flesh. Later we find that we regret the decission later, only to run back again later.

We cry, we yearn for more but we run from the truth we hide from ourselves and the God who loves us. The people fed by Jesus wanted a messiah to take away all need to toil and strain. They hid behind their piety but really they are just like us focusing on the flesh because we and they are too afraid to face the truth. Jesus call them out on the truth and He calls us out too. He calls, asking us if what wedo with our bodies are enhncing our spirit our if it is just empty darkness. He is asking you what makes you live!

About jwquaker

I’m sure everyone wants to know who I am…well if you are viewing this page you do. I’m Jared Warner and I am a pastor or minister recorded in the Evangelical Friends Church Mid America Yearly Meeting. To give a short introduction to the EFC-MA, it is a group of evangelical minded Friends in the Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Colorado. We are also a part of the larger group called Evangelical Friends International, which as the name implies is an international group of Evangelical Friends. For many outside of the Friends or Quaker traditions you may ask what a recorded minister is: the short answer is that I have demistrated gifts of ministry that our Yearly Meeting has recorded in their minutes. To translate this into other terms I am an ordained pastor, but as Friends we believe that God ordaines and mankind can only record what God has already done. More about myself: I have a degree in crop science from Fort Hays State University, and a masters degree in Christian ministry from Friends University. Both of these universities are in Kansas. I lived most of my life in Kansas on a farm in the north central area, some may say the north west. I currently live and minister in the Kansas City, MO area and am a pastor in a programed Friends Meeting called Willow Creek Friends Church.
